Black women in tennis have faced significant obstacles due to both racism and sexism throughout the history of the sport. Despite these challenges, black women have consistently demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination to succeed at the highest levels of the sport.

Racism has been a persistent issue in tennis, with black players facing discriminatory treatment both on and off the court. This has included racial slurs and other forms of abuse from both fans and other players, as well as a lack of support and opportunities for black players within the sport. 

Sexism is another form of discrimination that black women in tennis have had to overcome. Women in tennis, regardless of race, have long faced unequal treatment and a lack of recognition for their achievements. This has included unequal pay, limited media coverage, and limited opportunities to compete at the highest levels of the sport. Black women have continued to demonstrate remarkable resilience and determination, and have made significant contributions to the sport.

The resilience of black women in tennis is a testament to their unwavering determination and strength of spirit. Despite facing discrimination and prejudice, they have continued to push forward and make their mark on the sport. Their legacy of resilience serves as an inspiration to all women in tennis and beyond and demonstrates the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.  Today, we celebrate women in tennis and hope that this serves as an inspiration to black girls around the world.

Althea Gibson

Althea Gibson was an American tennis player who was born in South Carolina and raised in Harlem, New York. She was the first black woman to win a Grand Slam title, winning the French Championships in 1956, and she went on to win the Wimbledon Championships in 1957 and 1958. Gibson was a trailblazer in the sport of tennis, breaking down barriers and paving the way for future generations of black women to follow in her footsteps.

Gibson faced numerous challenges throughout her career. She was often subject to racism and prejudice from both players and fans, and she struggled to find support and sponsorship for her career. Nevertheless, she remained dedicated to her sport and continued to compete at the highest level.

Ora Washington

Ora Washington was an American tennis player and educator active in the early 20th century. She was one of the greatest black female tennis players of her time and was known for her exceptional athleticism and competitive spirit. She was born in Philadelphia in 1885 and began playing tennis as a child, quickly becoming one of the best players of her era.

Washington's success on the tennis court helped to break down barriers for black women in the sport and she was a trailblazer for future generations of black female athletes. She was a fierce competitor, and her athleticism and determination inspired many young girls to take up the sport.

In addition to her success as a player, Washington was also known for her work as an educator. She worked as a physical education teacher and was dedicated to promoting the importance of fitness and athleticism, particularly among young girls.

Washington's contributions to the sport of tennis and her commitment to promoting fitness and wellness have earned her a place in the annals of American sports history. Lori McNeil

Venus Williams

Venus Williams is an American former tennis player who won a total of 49 Grand Slam titles during her career. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, and she was a dominant force in the sport for many years.

Venus faced numerous challenges throughout her career, including injury and intense competition from other top players. Nevertheless, she remained dedicated to her sport and continued to compete at the highest level, winning Grand Slam titles and establishing herself as one of the top players in the world.

Sloane Stephens

Stephens is known for her powerful groundstrokes and athleticism, as well as her mental toughness and competitiveness on the court. Zina Garrison

Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka is a Japanese professional tennis player. She has been ranked world No. 1 in singles by the Women's Tennis Association and is the first Asian player to hold the top ranking in singles. Osaka is a four-time Grand Slam singles champion, with two Australian Open and two US Open titles.


Naomi has received backlash – from black people – for choosing to play for Japan instead of the United States of America at the Olympics. These people insisted her ‘black card was revoked’, even though she had played for Japan since was fourteen years old.

Young black girls are now able to see themselves reflected in the sport and know that they too can achieve their dreams, regardless of their race or gender.

In addition to inspiring young girls, the representation of black women in tennis has also helped to promote diversity and inclusiveness within the sport. This has led to a more welcoming and supportive environment for all players, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or background. This has helped to break down the barriers that have historically prevented many black women from participating in the sport and has created more opportunities for all players to succeed.
