World Cancer Day Walk 2024

By Ruth Ajawu

On February 3, 2024, Shades of Us attended the World Cancer Day Walk hosted by Project PINK BLUE. Since 2015, this organization has been at the forefront of World Cancer Day activities in Nigeria, and this year's edition carried the same message: cancer is a serious and often misunderstood illness that affects millions of people worldwide. By raising awareness and promoting early detection, we can help to improve the lives of those affected by the disease and increase the chances of successful treatment.

The event featured the option of a 5km walk, race, cycle, ride, or marathon against cancer. The route, starting from Transcorp Hilton Abuja, took participants through Aguiyi Ironsi Way, Shehu Shagari Way, Unity Fountain, Federal Secretariat by Eagle Square, Hospital Avenue, Ahmadu Bello Way Harrow Park, BMO Events Arena, Big Bite junction, Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent (Studio 24), DST Office, and back to Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

Hundreds of people came together to honor those lost to cancer, raise funds for individuals currently battling the disease, and amplify their support for cancer awareness.

A significant aspect of the event was the provision of free Breast, Cervical, and Prostate Cancer Screenings, medical counseling, and hepatitis tests, ensuring that attendees had access to essential health check-ups.

While millions are surviving cancer in other parts of the world, the stark reality in Nigeria calls for urgent support. The World Cancer Day Walk served as a reminder of the importance of collective action to overcome the challenges faced by those affected by cancer.

As World Cancer Day ends, Shades of Us urges individuals and communities to unite, raise awareness, and support the ongoing fight against cancer in Nigeria.
