The Audacity to Smile

Custodians of Human Stories

Partner Contribution: This article was written by CoHuman (Collective Humanity Development Network) and is published here by Shades of Us as part of our partnership to amplify stories and perspectives that advance justice, human rights, and social change. Thank you.

Through our work across Internally Displaced Persons communities and other underserved populations, we have become grounded custodians of a human stories archive.

In our journey of documenting the footprints of their lives, their departure from shattered homes, the rubble of wounded bodies and wounded strength, the loss of life and everything that once defined comfort in a place they called home, one thing displacement and crisis could never strip from them is their beauty, resilience, and the radiant audacity to smile and hold onto culture even at the edge of a dangling thread of despair.

We see the beauty in children, women, and families, and we are amazed by the strength within the hearts of people when they decide not to let go of hope.

It is in this shared hope that our work as community carers grows more courageous, anchored on the belief that with consistency and a push through the gaps, a better future is still possible for internally displaced children and families.

We will keep pushing until their plights reach the right table and help comes through, until we witness and document the footprints of buried strife, rebuilding, and returning to the place called home.

We cannot do this in isolation. We need collective action to push through the barriers as we restore hope together.

About CoHuman

CoHuman (Collective Humanity Development Network) is a Nigerian nonprofit dedicated to restoring dignity, hope, and human connection within Internally Displaced Persons communities and other underserved populations. Through storytelling, psychosocial support, and consistent presence on the ground, we document the resilience of children, women, and families who refuse to let go of hope, even in displacement. We believe lasting change is collective, and we work to bring the plights of displaced and underserved communities to the tables where real help and restoration can begin.

Advancing Humanity Together. Because We Are Human.
